HD is an acronym for high definition. It refers to a high quality, high resolution components from the media, such as HD-DVD's to the equipment they play on like HD-DVD Players and HD Televisions. Currently there is a standard way to gauge definition and resolution of a television, but the media it is presented on is at war. That's where Blu-Ray and HD-DVD are fighting it out, but does not effect the TV you play it on.
High-Def televisions are relatively common now and only change in quality as you increase their resolution. HDTV has at least twice the linear resolution of standard-definition television (SDTV), thus allowing much more detail to be shown compared with analog television or regular DVD. In addition, the technical standards for broadcasting HDTV are also able to handle 16:9 aspect ratio pictures without using letterboxing or anamorphic stretching, thus further increasing the effective resolution for such content.

As you can see in the images obove, the higher resolution, the more detail for the same image. This creates a crisper, cleaner, and more vibrant image than standard definition ever could.

Purchased my HD-DLP last year and it was one of the greatest investments in my living room I’ve ever made.
