For those waiting on a clear winner in the next generation DVD, you may be holding your breath for awhile. Turning blue and passing out may be an option for you, but many early adopters and movie buffs are finding a work around to the format war. As of this writing many titles available only in Blu-Ray can be found in HD-DVD, the trick is knowing where to look.
According to the Wall Street Journal many moviephiles are shopping overseas to get their HD-DVD fix. The reason is that many Blu-Ray only movies here in the States are available in HD-DVD in Europe. Granted, shipping prices are gonna eat you up, but it’s cheaper than buying 2 next-gen DVD players.
Worried about region coding? Don’t be, HD-DVD’s do not come with region coding so you can play any HD-DVD in any player, whether it be a US or European model. Blu-Ray has failed to adopt the belief that region coding is unnecessary, so a Blu-Ray DVD bought in Europe will NOT work in you’re US Blu-Ray player.
I think the ability to purchase region free HD-DVD’s of any movie, regardless of the release company may be a sign of things to come. Hopefully it will at least force the 2 rival formats to compete on a level playing field, allowing all movies to be released in both formats. And is it too much to ask for an affordable dual player?
