Product Description You may not be aware of this but the DVD player in your home isn't ready for high-definition. For HD, you need Blu-Ray. Blu-ray Disc is the next-generation format for high definition entertainment. It's a new dimension in sound and image quality, and it's the future of home-theater sound and video technologies. Paired with a high performance HDTV, you can have a truly cinematic experience. Watch movies with the stunning picture and intensely rich sound that puts you in the middle of the action. The DMPBD10AK is the first Blu-ray Disc player capable of decoding Dolby True HD - a new surround sound format that uses less compression than regular Dolby Digital to produce fuller, richer movie sound effects with up to 7.1 channels of surround sound. Blu-ray discs can store 25GB (single layer) or 50GB (dual layer) on a single sided disc -- about 5 to 10 times the capacity of a DVD. Blu-ray discs also support the highest quality HD video available in the industry (up to 1920 x 1080 at 40 Mbit/sec) for full 1080p, when used with HDMI connectivity. Best Blu-Ray DVD Player March 9, 2008 After researching the sony and sharp, the Panasonic start from load is less than 30 seconds, haven't required an update as of yet, Everything works wonderfully. Also own the first generation Toshibs HD DVD player, but now unfortunately, even though the insane load time, HD DVD looks like it has bitten the dust. Asked Toshiba what they plan to do for existing purchasers, with no surpirse, no response to my email. Picture quality equals if not excells the best HD DVD Player to my astonishment. 5 Star player. No reason to consider anything else.
Panasonic DMP-BD10AK 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player March 9, 2008 The picture quality is great. I'm not sure if it is designed that way but it makes a clunking sound when ejecting the disc.
Great player! February 23, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I have a Toshiba HD-DVD player, but with the demise of HD-DVD, I decided to get a Blu-ray player. I bought this specific model because is has 5.1 or 7.1 analog out, and decodes everything internally, up to, but not including DTS-HD MA. No other player I've found will do all of this. This player is out of production, replaced by the DMP-BD30, but the BD30 doesn't have 5.1/7.1 out, so I would have had to get a different receiver. My receiver had an unused 5.1 analog in, so this player is perfect for my needs. I missed the closeout sales of these players by a few days, so I'd been looking around for sometime, and found one from an Amazon seller. Came with everything except the 5 free DVDs, unfortunately.
When I got it, it had version 1 firmware, so the first thing I did after I made sure it worked ok out of the box was update it to the latest version, 2.4. This added some audio decoding features, to include DTS-HD (not MA though).
I've noted that it boots much faster than my Toshiba HD-DVD player, which is nice. However, since Blu-ray is an evolving standard which hadn't matured when the 10a was produced, unlike HD-DVD, the 10a doesn't have an internet connection for direct firmware upgrades, and other internet features. I can live without that since it is easily upgraded by CD. Picture quality is great, and it plays all of the Blu-ray and standard DVDs I've thrown at it. But since neither it nor the Toshiba player will do Divx or region free, I've still got my trusty Oppo player in the mix. My plasma is a 720p native version, so the lack of 1080p/24fps in the 10a doesn't bother me. The 10a does support 1080p (normal) however.
All in all, I'm very happy.
Dead in less than 4 months February 14, 2008 1 out of 7 found this review helpful
I bought this and had no troubles until about 3 and a half months after I bought it. One day it went dead. It won't turn on or do anything. It sat in the same place for that time, undisturbed except for regular use.
Blu-ray is awesome! January 12, 2008 22 out of 23 found this review helpful
I'm quite pleased with the Panasonic DMP-BD10AK. That said, if you're now in the market for a high-end Panasonic Blu-ray player, I suggest you wait for the just-announced Panasonic DMP-BD50. The BD10AK is discontinued and it's replacement seems to be the DMP-BD50. The DMP-BD30 looks nice on paper but it seems to be targeting a lower price point (ie. fewer features).
I went with the BD10AK because I needed the analog decoding built into the player as I have an older AVR that cannot decode the new higher definition audio formats. With the BD50 now announced, it is best to get that instead.
