Good but not great March 24, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I purchased this player along with a KDL-46XBR Sony tv. I was a bit suprised by the long boot times, and find the menu system somewhat awkward compared to older technology DVD players. I believe, from what I've read that this is typical for many of the high definition players.
I'm very happy with the upscaling performance of this unit. I suspect that some of this happiness may be from the improved television, but the combination is quite good. I'm less happy with the audio output, or at least with my ability to see what the player is outputting to the receiver. The documentation about this is somewhat confusing in the users manual.
Overall, it is performing quite well, but I don't know if it justifies the additional expense over a BDP-S300. I purchased specifically for future 7.1 audio, and until I upgrade receivers I won't know if that was worthwhile
Excellent Performance but Slow Start-up March 4, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I purchased this disk player because I wanted a mid priced Sony BluRay player to match my Sony HD LCD and A/V receiver to insure compatibility. It worked great right out of the box. I did review the Sony support site prior to the purchase and did the firmware upgrade prior to using it for the first time. I have had ZERO problems with reading BluRay, DVD and CD's. The wife makes home DVD videos of vacation pictures using Roxio Easy DVD creator and the Sony has played each without any problems. I am very satisfied with the player's performance. The only down side is that it takes a few minutes to boot-up after turn on and takes a minute to read a disk after insertion. So it's kinda slow on those two issues.
get something that works. March 2, 2008 0 out of 3 found this review helpful
The unit has countless errors and problems. There is often a several minute lag time between remote command and the units compliance. Some movies won't ever play, ever! (brand new movies). Not one movie has ever started to play in less than twenty minutes. The unit is sooo slow, I wonder if it even has a kilobyte of RAM. I know they say the "good" players take a long time. But I don't understand why it should take five minutes to turn on and open up. Very very poor design! I'm giving it away and buying a different one.
Sony BDP-S500 1080p Blu-Ray Disc Player February 24, 2008 Sony BDP-S500 1080p Blu-Ray Disc Player is the best investment that I have made to support my CD/DVD collection. Using Blu-Ray DVD'S the picture feels 3D, picture is WOW. Using regular DVD'S the picture conversion is incredible.
BEST PLAYER AMONG THEM FOR IN THE MIDDLE February 21, 2008 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
This is the best player I have owned so far. I have owned the LG blu-ray/hd-dvd combo, PS3, Bdp-s1, Bdps300 and the HDA1. It loads as fast as any of them, about 45 seconds, then 15 - 30 seconds to play depending on how new the movie is. Firmware updates help the java loading on newer movies. I gave it four stars for not have DTS HD Master bitstream, but they could easily update its firmware to send it down the pipe. For upscaling it is amazing. The detail on peoples hair etc. is super fine. Unlike what people say, regular DVD players that upscale, can't TRUELY upscale, they just line double. The Blu-Ray players have the processing power to TRUELY process the pixels into a higher resolution. I have owned the DENON 3910 DVD player, and even this superb player could'nt upscale like this one. I bought this player for the HDMI 1.3 for Bitstream HD Audio and support for High bandwidth colors. The BDP-S300 isn't HDMI 1.3, so it lacks future abilities for higher color gamut. All in all this is the best player in its price range. I have hooked it up to both a LG 47lc7df LCD and a Mitsubishi WD65833 Diamond series DLP. Both look crystal clean. Movies will very on quality depending on the transfer and age of material.
