Guess I got lucky May 10, 2008 After reading some of the negative reviews of this player, I was a bit leery about purchasing it and withheld comment until I'd put a good 50 hours on it. But the Sharp works just dandy. It arrived in basically plug-and-play configuration. It plays DVDs and my audio CDs flawlessly, even tracking a few abused discs that kicked themselves out of my old machine. I am not using the HDMI output as my Olevia TV supports only the Y Pb Pr connectors, but darn, that's a pretty picture!!! I have watched a couple of Blu-Ray discs on it without a single hang. The machine has a solid feel to it, and so far has been a pleasure. There's a firmware update out there; I downloaded it to a stick as instructed but was unable to install. Any ideas? Something about reformatting the stick first in FAT format; I presume this is a Microsoft/Windows thing which my Mac is not interested in doing. I'm listening to an Iris Dement audio CD as I type this. The Sharp has brought a new brilliance to my CD collection, and the Blu-Ray version of Letters from Iwo Jima has a remarkable clarity. So maybe I got lucky, and in a month I'll hate this thing, but so far so good. I'd recommend this machine to anyone.
Sharp BDHP20 Blu Ray, be careful it's not all good ! May 4, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I purchased unit from local PC Richard & Sons in Brooklyn NY. Within 2 weeks, while playing regular DVD, or trying to play it, it refused to play and would not eject DVD. Tried everything including doing a reset advised by Sharp Cust. service. Received return label, and off it went to Sharp land for repair and to get my Netflix DVD out. It came back, and apparently they put in new Firmware from the packing slip they attached. I took the same DVD that started the problem, and it now played and ejected properly. Fast forward to 4 - 5 weeks later, Saturday night, put in a DVD, same thing. I can not play or eject. Sharp cust. service not available till Monday. Here we go again, they will apologize forever, send me a return label, and De Ja Vu ... Careful buying this unit, it may not be ready for prime time !!!! This Blu Ray player has been on delivery trucks so often, I may have to enclose a Barf Bag in case it gets motion sickness.
OK BR Player April 15, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought this a little over 2 months ago as I needed a new DVD player and it didn't seem right to buy a "regular" DVD player. I got mine for around $350 - not too bad.
I have 1 BR disk so far and it looks amazing. Standard DVD's look really good as well.
The one problem that I have encountered is that it won't play DVD-DL disks that I burn off my computer (my computer is set up as a PVR) It says incompatible disk. as a result I had to go out and buy a standard DVD player anyway - talk about frustrating.
I guess I'm glad I did buy it before HD-DVD bowed out. the price is just insane now (over $800) I think the BR camp just set themselves back 2 years on getting mainstream adoption by the masses. The $350 price point was about the limit that I was willing to pay for a DVD player - I don't know who would even consider this at over $800. Mind boggling
"Incompatible disc" error April 14, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
Same story here as the rest of these reviews. This Sharp piece-of-stool worked for about one day, then wouldn't play the same BD that I just played the nite before. Gives me an "incompatible disc" error after 2 minutes of reading the disc. It even gives the incompatible disc error without a disc in it. Downloaded and installed the upgrade no problem, but still won't play any discs. I'm past the return period, so I expect I'll have to send it back to that crappy company for repair. NEVER BUY SHARP PRODUCTS!
Worst Electronic Device EVER!!!! April 14, 2008 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
The only thing worse than this piece of junk is Windows Vista. Buy it at your own risk. It's slow. It works about 50% of the time. I wish I could lash out at this product with the profanity it deserves!!!!!!!!! JUNK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
